SÍNTESE HISTÓRICA E AVANÇOS NO CONHECIMENTO DE GIRINOS (AMPHIBIA ANURA) NO ESTADO DE ALAGOAS, NORDESTE DO BRASIL

Tadpoles have unique morphological diversity adapted to aquatic life. Although mostly restricted to water bodies, tadpoles are poorly known compared to their adult phase. In Brazil, which leads the world diversity of amphibians, only 60% of the species have their larval stage known. Here, our goal was to gather data from researches developed with tadpoles in the state of Alagoas and provide a general view regarding the status of knowledge and threats. Among the 72 species of anurans already recorded in Alagoas, 69 have larval stage and six of them still have the tadpoles undescribed. Twelve species of anurans have their tadpoles described from individuals collected Alagoas, 11 of which corresponded to the first larval description for the species. Only 18% and 32% of these species present the chondrocranium, Hyobranchial apparatus and the internal oral anatomy detailed described. The presence of the chytrid fungus has already been confirmed in five tadpoles of Alagoas. Nine ecomorphological guilds and 15 reproductive modes have already been recorded for the state. Gaps and challenges in knowledge on the tadpoles of Alagoas are pointed out to guide future studies aiming a better understanding of the larval phase of this superdiverse vertebrates group.
