There are several species of mustelids that interact with fishing populations all over the world, however, there are few studies that address the theme in Brazil. This is the first study that focuses on the interaction of Lontra longicaudis (Olfers, 1818), with a fishing population in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Through interviews conducted in a fishing community in the municipality of Nisia Floresta, we obtained information about the fishing activity with creels and the interactions between otters and fishermen. The main interaction pointed out by the fishermen was the otter's interest in the traps used for fishing Macrobrachium sp., These made with mangrove branches that are periodically being broken by the otter. Therefore, the objective of this work is to present a solution to improve the fishermen's equipment, thus resulting in success in their artisanal fisheries and also generating subsidies for the conservation of Lontra longicaudis. Despite the constant persecution in the region, it is possible to see that fishermen understand that otters, like themselves, also depend on shrimp, fish and the river to survive. This and new ideas should be stimulated among the other fishermen in Brazil, to reduce this conflict, together with an environmental education work that follows the perspective of the preservation of Lontra longicaudis in Brazil.
